Joe Han Lee is an award winning artist, and alumnus of Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University where he has studied material art and design, specializing in jewellery and metalsmithing. Joe Han Lee's fascination with the art of jewellery crafting started early as he has grown up watching his grandfather, and then his uncle, perfect their craftsmanship in jewellery making. The family has owned a successful jewellery business in a beautiful small beach town called 'Pasir Putih' (White Sand) in South East Asia since the 1950s.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncle, Joe Han Lee is a third generation jewellery artisan originating from South East Asia. He currently resides in Canada, and the experience of being in a different culture as well as how that experience transforms ones identity, plays a major role in the direction of his art. Joe Han Lee's main inspiration comes from the interplay of old and new elements coexisting and forever transforming each other. It exemplifies how our past and present coincide to perpetually alter our future. He produces fine art jewellery that is both old and new by blending traditional metalsmithing techniques with modern metalsmithing techniques, in addition to incorporating elements of antiquity in a modern and wearable form. Through his work, Joe Han Lee invites the wearers to take a moment and reflect on their past, ponder the present, and explore the many possibilities of the future.
To maintain the highest quality, Joe Han Lee only handcrafts his jewellery pieces one at a time, and all jewellery pieces by Joe Han Lee are one-of-a-kind or in limited production.
Joe Han Lee is a member of Craft Ontario and Metal Arts Guild of Canada. Among other places, his jewellery pieces has been selected for exhibition at Craft Ontario Gallery, Gladstone Hotel, and recently in Milan and Paris.
